Authorities have identified the young driver who lost his life in a crash along Highway 99 in Turlock. Carson Souza, 19, of Turlock, was pronounced dead at the scene following the early morning incident on Tuesday.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded to reports of a crash around 12:23 a.m. just north of West Main Street. Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered a Chevrolet SUV engulfed in flames.
Initial investigations indicate Souza had been driving northbound in the No. 1 lane when the vehicle suddenly drifted to the right, exited the roadway, and collided with a tree. The force of the impact caused the SUV to catch fire, which was later extinguished by responders.
Souza, who was the only person in the vehicle, did not survive the crash. Officials have not yet determined whether he was wearing a seat belt or if alcohol or drugs played a role. The incident remains under investigation.
