A 44-year-old woman lost her life after being struck by an ambulance in a hit-and-run incident in Brooklyn.
Cherry Cayetano Sobel was crossing the street near Ocean Avenue and Avenue O in Midwood early Thursday morning when the collision occurred just before 6:40 a.m.
Authorities say an ambulance making a left turn hit Sobel as she entered the roadway. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators shows the vehicle turning with sirens audible at the time of the incident. After striking her, the ambulance continued driving.
Sobel was transported to Maimonides Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead. Officials confirmed that the ambulance involved is affiliated with the hospital, and the emergency crew on board has since been suspended while the case is under investigation.
According to police, Sobel lived in Flatbush, only a short distance from where the crash took place. Witnesses reported that bystanders, including passengers from a nearby bus, rushed to assist her immediately after the impact, while the bus driver attempted to follow the ambulance.
No arrests have been made so far, and authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
