A deadly crash in northern Iowa claimed the lives of two Belmond residents following a collision involving pickup trucks Friday evening.
Michael Thomas Michelson, 65, was driving along Highway 69 near 200th Street in Wright County when the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Authorities say he attempted to make an illegal U-turn, leading to a collision with another southbound pickup.
The impact proved fatal for both Michelson and his passenger, 71-year-old Ellen Kay Countryman, who were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the second vehicle struck Michelson’s truck during the attempted turn, causing catastrophic damage.
Officials confirmed that the crash remains under investigation as they work to determine all contributing factors.
