A 42-year-old man, Robert Stokes, was killed in an early morning shooting in the Friendship Heights area just across the Maryland–D.C. line, where authorities say the incident is being treated as a murder-suicide.

Police were called shortly after 1:00 a.m. to the 5200 block of 44th Street NW after reports of gunfire. When officers arrived, they found two adult men unconscious with gunshot wounds inside the location. Emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined the incident was likely domestic in nature. According to preliminary findings, a 44-year-old Bethesda resident, Terrell Cross, reportedly arrived at the location, shot Stokes, and then turned the weapon on himself. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the case. Officials are continuing to review evidence and speak with witnesses to confirm the sequence of events.

Authorities have not released further details about what led to the confrontation. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to fully understand the relationship between those involved and the events that led to the fatal encounter.
