Authorities have confirmed that a 66-year-old Norwich resident, Maria Cardoza, died following a collision involving a heavy-duty tow vehicle in the city.

The crash occurred on the morning of April 10, 2026, along the 700 block of West Thames Road, where investigators say Cardoza’s vehicle collided head-on with a wrecker truck. Emergency crews responded shortly after the incident was reported.

Cardoza was transported to Backus Hospital for emergency treatment, but she later died as a result of her injuries. Officials confirmed that the driver of the tow vehicle was not hurt in the crash.

Law enforcement officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the collision. Authorities have not yet released additional details about what may have caused the vehicles to collide.
