Authorities in Kershaw County have confirmed the death of a 29-year-old man following a late-night hit-and-run incident along Wildwood Lane near Elgin. Brandon James Butler was discovered on the roadside after being struck while traveling on a moped.
Law enforcement officials say emergency crews were called to the 1200 block of Wildwood Lane shortly after 1:26 a.m. after a report of an injured person lying near the roadway. Responders arrived alongside state highway patrol investigators and coroner personnel.
Investigators determined that Butler had been riding his moped toward Elgin when he was hit by a passing vehicle that did not stop after the collision. The driver involved fled the scene, leaving the victim behind.
Authorities with the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team are continuing to examine the circumstances of the crash. Officials are asking anyone with information about the incident or the suspect vehicle to contact investigators.
