Fatal New York, New York shooting death of Anthony Griffin – Obituary
A violent confrontation inside New York City’s Grand Central Terminal ended with the death of Anthony Griffin, a 44-year-old man after multiple people were injured during a stabbing attack and police opened fire to stop him.
Authorities said the incident began Saturday morning when the man entered the city’s subway system from Queens and traveled into Manhattan, where he moved through Grand Central and began attacking commuters on train platforms. Three individuals, a 65-year-old man, a 70-year-old woman, and an 84-year-old man, were wounded during the assault, suffering injuries that included severe cuts and head trauma.
Police reported that transit officers were alerted after civilians witnessed the attacks. When officers arrived on the scene, they encountered the suspect still armed and actively posing a threat. Commands were issued repeatedly for him to drop the weapon, but he refused and advanced toward officers instead.
Officers attempted verbal de-escalation while urging him to stop, but the situation escalated as he continued moving toward them with the weapon raised. At that point, law enforcement discharged their firearms, striking him twice and bringing the incident to an end.
Emergency responders transported all injured victims to nearby hospitals, where they were listed in stable condition despite serious injuries. Officials also confirmed that the suspect had a prior arrest history, though the attack was believed to be random and unrelated to the victims.
Two officers involved in the response were also taken to hospital for evaluation and later reported to be stable. The transit system experienced temporary disruptions while authorities secured the area and began an investigation into the sequence of events.
City and state officials said they had been briefed shortly after the incident and praised the rapid police response that prevented further harm inside one of the city’s busiest transportation hubs. The investigation remains ongoing, with officials reviewing body camera footage and witness accounts to determine the full timeline of the attack and police response.
