State police reported that Scott K. Berberian dies in fatal Stafford, New York car crash after a GMC pickup he was driving was struck from behind by a BMW traveling in the same direction. The force of the impact caused the pickup to roll over, leading to Berberian being thrown from the vehicle.
Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after 8:53 p.m. and confirmed that Berberian was pronounced dead where the crash occurred.
Investigators said the BMW driver, a 67-year-old man from Churchville, showed signs of intoxication at the scene and later failed sobriety testing. Authorities reported that a breath test indicated a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent.
The driver of the BMW was not injured but was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including felony vehicular manslaughter and driving while impaired. The investigation into the circumstances of the crash is still ongoing, with state police collision specialists assisting in the case.
