Two members of the family of late Cook County Commissioner Dennis Deer were killed in a shooting on Chicago’s West Side.

Authorities identified the victims as 51-year-old Barbara Deer and her 23-year-old son Kaleb Deer, both found unresponsive inside a residence in the Homan Square area.

Police said officers were called just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday to a home in the 3500 block of West Arthington Street after reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they discovered both individuals suffering from gunshot wounds inside the residence.

Investigators reported that Barbara Deer had been struck multiple times in the chest, while Kaleb Deer had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

A firearm was recovered at the location as detectives began processing evidence and interviewing potential witnesses.

Chicago police stated that Area Four detectives are leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the double homicide. At this stage, no arrests have been announced, and the motive remains unclear.

City officials and community leaders have expressed condolences to the Deer family, noting the broader impact of repeated acts of violence in the area as the investigation continues.
