Authorities in Asheville are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that left one man dead and an officer injured during a late-night incident on Hendersonville Road.
Police identified the deceased as James Jones, who was shot after officers responded to reports of a person armed with a gun at a business in the 1900 block of Hendersonville Road. According to investigators, officers approached the entrance when the suspect allegedly fired through a glass door, prompting officers to return fire.
Jones was struck during the exchange and transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, he later died the following day from his injuries.
Officials reported that one Asheville police officer was also hurt during the incident, suffering non-life-threatening injuries caused by shattered glass from the gunfire.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead in reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting, working alongside local authorities and the district attorney’s office. Evidence collection began shortly after the incident was reported.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not released further details as they continue to piece together what led up to the confrontation.
