Authorities have identified the young woman who lost her life following a suspected DUI crash in Fresno County.
Wendy Gonzalez, 25, was among the occupants of a vehicle involved in the incident late Thursday night. According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred near Jensen and Navelencia avenues, just east of Minkler, shortly before 11:30 p.m.
Investigators say the driver, identified as 22-year-old Alexander Alcocer, was performing dangerous maneuvers in the roadway when the vehicle veered off course and plunged into a canal.
While Alcocer and a male passenger were able to escape the vehicle, Gonzalez was initially missing. Rescue crews later located her body downstream, and she was transported to a hospital in Reedley, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities have arrested Alcocer on charges including gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. He is currently being held in the Fresno County Jail on bail set at $260,000 as the investigation continues.
