Following a collision at a gathering for young children, one adult and multiple minors sustained injuries, police confirmed. The incident occurred on Saturday evening in Bladensburg, Maryland.
The individual behind the wheel is believed to have departed the immediate area before eventually contacting law enforcement authorities on Sunday. This driver, identified by police as a 66-year-old male from Washington, D.C., is anticipated to be formally charged with offenses.
Identified as Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez, aged 31 and also from the District of Columbia, was the woman whose passing was reported.
According to official statements from Bladensburg police, the vehicle involved approached from the Annapolis Road area and collided with individuals assembled outdoors at a residence located within the 4100 block of 56th Avenue. Emergency services, including officers, responded to the scene shortly after 10:15 p.m.
Photographic documentation of the accident site indicates a light-colored sedan positioned inside a white party tent, with visible debris located underneath the vehicle.
Upon impact, the driver reportedly fled the scene. Law enforcement subsequently requested assistance from the public to help locate the person who had driven away.
By the following day, Sunday, it was announced that the driver had been taken into custody after speaking with a member of the crash investigation team.
The initial assessment from police indicated a total of eleven people were involved in the collision. Updated information later clarified that this included eight children and six adults, with the woman killed being among the adult victims.
Further details provided by the Bladensburg police department in a statement issued on Sunday mentioned that six of the younger victims had received medical attention and were released, while one juvenile remained under observation but was reported to be in stable health. Among the adults, three were hospitalized, one’s treatment status was pending, and one had already been discharged. Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez was confirmed as the adult fatality.
Those affected by the incident were transported to medical facilities including Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., UM Capital Region Medical Center in Largo, Maryland, and Howard University Hospital.
