Law enforcement operations initiated following a reported theft incident in the city of Terry led to a fatal collision that occurred in Jackson on Friday. Two individuals lost their lives as a result of the vehicular accident.

Initial reports indicated that Mississippi authorities, specifically the Terry Police Department, were dispatched to a retail establishment identified as a Dollar General store due to suspicions of merchandise theft. According to available information, the suspect involved in this incident allegedly removed multiple packages of tobacco products from the premises before fleeing the scene.

This particular suspect was reported to be in possession of a weapon, which necessitated the involvement of additional law enforcement agencies, including the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office and the Byram Police Department. These resources were mobilized to manage the developing situation.

Subsequently, a supervisor with the Byram Police force intercepted the suspect’s vehicle, described as a brown or gold-colored Ford Expedition, while it was being operated northbound on the controlled access highway known as Interstate 55. Initial contact between the officer and the driver resulted in the suspect complying for a short period before abruptly refusing to stop and attempting to evade apprehension by law enforcement personnel.

This high-speed chase continued along the route towards Jackson, culminating in a significant collision at a major intersection located at the crossing point of Raymond Road and Robinson Road. The suspect’s vehicle struck another automobile, specifically a black 2014 model year Nissan.

Inside the impacted Nissan sedan were identified as Shali Davenport, who was 48 years old, and her mother, Debra A. Washington, who was 66 years old. Both occupants suffered fatal injuries directly from the collision.

A third individual who was also present in the vehicle involved in the crash sustained injuries that, according to medical assessment, were not immediately life-threatening. This person was transported to a medical facility designated as the University of Mississippi Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment.

The suspect responsible for initiating this sequence of events was apprehended and transported alongside the injured party to the same medical center, the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where they are currently being held in custody by law enforcement officials.

Chief David Errington of the Byram Police Department expressed profound sorrow and condemnation regarding the incident, stating, “It’s horrible — it’s tragic — and there’s not any words I can say.” He emphasized that if the initial subject had simply complied with the officers’ request to pull over and exit the vehicle, the outcome would have been a minor traffic citation, leading to a swift resolution without any serious consequences.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol has officially taken the lead role in conducting a comprehensive investigation into these recent events. This investigation is currently being supported by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. As is standard procedure, the specific identity of the suspect involved has not been released to the public, and the case remains active under ongoing review.
