Six people, including three from Alpharetta, Georgia, were killed Tuesday afternoon in a severe head-on collision on U.S. 67 in Johnson County, Texas, southwest of Fort Worth.
Authorities reported that a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado attempted to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone just before 4 p.m., colliding directly with a 2021 Honda Odyssey carrying the Georgia family. The impact caused extensive front-end damage to both vehicles.
Among those who died were 10-year-old Krithik Potabathula, 9-year-old Nishidha Potabathula, and their mother, 36-year-old Naveena Potabathula, all from Alpharetta. Also killed were Nageswararao Ponnada, 64, and Sitamahalakshmi Ponnada, 60, visiting family from India, as well as 28-year-old Rushil Barri of Irving, Texas, driving the Silverado.
The only survivor in the Odyssey, 43-year-old Lokesh Potabathula, was critically injured and hospitalized in Fort Worth. Three others, including the teenage driver and passenger of the Silverado, were also critically injured.
Authorities shut down the highway for hours following the crash. Investigators have not disclosed the vehicles’ speeds at the time of the collision. The Texas Department of Public Safety worked with local and international authorities to notify the victims’ families.
