A young man lost his life after a shooting incident in Pittsburgh’s Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood on Wednesday. Authorities confirmed that 25-year-old Dashaun Jamaal Awkward, a resident of Wilkinsburg, was found in an alley running alongside California Avenue with multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders pronounced Awkward dead at the scene as police began investigating the circumstances surrounding the violence.
Residents in the area expressed growing alarm over safety issues, saying the incident reflects a broader rise in troubling activity within the neighborhood. Community members, including Daidra Younger, said efforts have been underway to address these concerns through organized meetings and outreach to city officials.
According to Younger, neighbors have formed groups and taken part in discussions focused on public safety and zoning in an attempt to push for change and improve conditions in the area.
Officials have acknowledged the concerns, with Pittsburgh City Council President Daniel Lavelle’s office confirming plans to meet with residents on Friday to listen to their concerns and discuss possible solutions.
