Authorities have identified a man who was shot and killed by deputies following a carjacking and police pursuit early Tuesday morning in Sacramento County.

According to officials, 33-year-old Tyler Allen Gress was named by the Sacramento County Coroner as the individual who died in the incident.

The situation began around 2:30 a.m. in Citrus Heights when Gress allegedly confronted a man at gunpoint, threatened his life, and stole his vehicle. During the encounter, at least one shot was reportedly fired. The victim, identified as Alexander Opdyke, was not injured.

Roughly half an hour later, deputies located the stolen vehicle near Eastern and Marconi avenues, leading to a pursuit. During the chase, authorities said Gress repeatedly pointed a firearm at pursuing officers.

The pursuit extended toward Sacramento International Airport before deputies used a tire deflation device to bring the vehicle to a stop along southbound Interstate 5 near Arena Boulevard.

Officials stated that after the vehicle was disabled, Gress exited and aimed a weapon at deputies. In response, four deputies discharged their firearms, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident. Investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
