Fatal Lahaina car crash death of Michael Bautistia
Investigators from the Maui Police Department confirmed that 48-year-old Michael Bautistia did not survive the incident that occurred on Thursday. The accident happened at approximately 5:45 a.m. along Honoapiilani Highway, close to the intersection with Fleming Road.
According to the police, a 52-year-old female driver lost control of her vehicle and collided with Bautistia as he attempted to turn left onto the highway. The impact was severe, throwing the bicyclist onto the roadway. He suffered serious injuries directly related to the collision.
Bautistia was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center following the accident. Medical examiners at the facility later determined that the fatal injuries he sustained were the cause of his death.
The individual operating the car was not injured and remained at the scene of the accident. Police officials cited the lack of helmet use by Bautistia as a contributing factor to the severity of his injuries. Additionally, the vehicle involved did not have its airbags deployed.
Further details gathered by the investigation indicate that excessive speed was not considered a factor. The police have not yet concluded whether substances like alcohol or drugs played any part in the incident.
This fatality represents the thirteenth traffic-related death reported in Maui this year, slightly higher than the eleven recorded during the same period last year.
