Aiden Keefe, a senior at Noble High School, was identified as the driver who lost his life Thursday afternoon after his pickup truck was struck by an Amtrak Downeaster train in North Berwick. School officials confirmed Keefe’s identity in a message sent to families by the school’s principal.
Principal AJ Dufort shared condolences with the community, saying Keefe was an important part of the Noble High School family and would be remembered fondly by classmates, teachers, and staff. The school remained open the following day and made counselors available to support students and employees coping with the loss.
Police said Keefe was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash, though officials stated that the railroad crossing gates were functioning properly at the time.
According to North Berwick Police, Keefe appeared to be turning right onto Elm Street from Buffum Road, where the railroad tracks cross the roadway at an angle near the intersection.
Members of the local community also shared memories of Keefe. Riverside Farm Stand & Greenhouse, where he worked during the 2024 season, described him on social media as kind, humorous, and dedicated.
Keefe was also active in athletics, playing wide receiver and returner on Noble High School’s football team. During the most recent season, he earned first-team honors on the Class A South All-Conference Team, highlighting his impact both on and off the field.
