Douglas and Tiffany Stewart die in fatal Bemidji train collision
Fatal Bemidji train collision death of Douglas and Tiffany Stewart – Obituary
Douglas Stewart, 61, and his wife Tiffany Stewart, 42, of rural Cass Lake, Minnesota, were killed when their SUV was struck by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train on January 30, 2026. The couple was pronounced dead at the scene in Farden Township, roughly 12 miles southeast of Bemidji.
According to Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes, the train conductor, Lee Silcox, 36, of Kempton, North Dakota, called 911 shortly before 10 a.m. Friday to report the crash. Responding deputies and medical personnel found the Stewarts’ vehicle at a railroad crossing, confirming both had died.
Preliminary findings indicate that the Stewarts’ 2016 Dodge Journey had stopped at a stop sign before crossing the tracks, but as the westbound train approached, the vehicle entered the intersection and was struck. The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
