Fatal Carson, California car crash death of Matthew Hellums – Obituary

Matthew Hellums, 38, was killed early Monday morning following a collision involving a minivan and a car on the Gardena (91) Freeway in Carson, California, according to county authorities.

The crash was reported at approximately 12:38 a.m. on the westbound lanes of the Gardena Freeway, just west of Central Avenue. California Highway Patrol officers arrived to find both vehicles stopped in the roadway and blocking the HOV lane.

Hellums was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officials. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed his identity.

A news videographer at the location reported that at least one other person was injured in the crash and transported to a hospital for treatment. Details regarding the extent of those injuries were not released.

The collision prompted the California Highway Patrol to issue a SigAlert, shutting down the westbound HOV lane along with lanes one through three for several hours. All affected lanes were reopened shortly after 4:18 a.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
