Family members have identified the victim as Juliana Smith, a devoted mother of five who leaves behind a sprawling network of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her daughter, overcome with grief, returned to the charred scene on Thursday morning and briefly shared memories of her mother, calling her a truly “phenomenal woman” whose love and strength touched countless lives.

The fire erupted around 10:15 p.m. in the 7000 block of South Bell Avenue. When firefighters arrived, they discovered Smith inside the engulfed residence, suffering from extensive burns. Paramedics immediately transported her to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Next-door neighbor Noel Hylton, who was at work during the outbreak, recounted the terror his wife experienced. She awoke to the thick scent of smoke filling the air and peered outside to witness towering flames consuming the neighboring house. “She smelled smoke and looked out the window… she saw how big the blaze was,” Hylton said. Reflecting on the scene, he described it as the most intense fire he’d ever witnessed, noting that he himself had survived a house fire two decades earlier and understood the profound devastation it brings. Even now, he remains at a loss for words over the loss of his neighbor.

This devastating event unfolded amid a night of multiple blazes in the area—hours later, another significant fire broke out in the 6300 block of South Oakley Avenue, seriously injuring a 39-year-old woman and displacing several residents. Authorities from the Chicago Fire Department and Chicago Police Department continue to investigate the causes of both incidents, with no preliminary findings released yet.

Smith’s passing has left a void in her close-knit family and the surrounding community, where she was remembered for her warmth and the legacy of generations she nurtured.
