Fatal Harvey County grain bin accident death of Mark Klaassen – Obituary

Mark Klaassen, 37, of Newton, Kansas, died Saturday afternoon after being trapped in a grain bin in southern Harvey County. Authorities reported that Klaassen was working with two others to level and empty soybeans in the bin on the 2100 block of South Spencer Road when the grain suddenly shifted.

Emergency responders arrived around 2:30 p.m., but Klaassen was pronounced dead at the scene. The two men working with him escaped without injury. Harvey County officials ruled the death accidental.

During the response, traffic on Spencer Road was temporarily redirected. Fire and EMS units from Newton, Halstead, and Sedgwick County assisted at the scene. Investigators are continuing to determine what caused the grain to collapse.
