Fatal Talleyville, DE shooting death of Daniel Shacklett – Obituary
Authorities have released the identity of a man who was shot and killed by police after a lengthy standoff at a residence in Talleyville, Delaware.
Investigators identified the man as 35-year-old Daniel Shacklett. The incident began Tuesday afternoon on Ramsey Road near Route 202 in New Castle County.
Police said officers were called to the home at about 3:50 p.m. after a roommate reported that Shacklett was inside the house with a firearm and had begun firing shots. When officers arrived, they said Shacklett continued shooting from inside the residence, prompting the department’s crisis management team to respond.
Negotiators spent roughly four hours attempting to persuade Shacklett to exit the home peacefully. During the standoff, officers maintained a perimeter while trying to de-escalate the situation.
According to police, Shacklett eventually came outside at around 7:45 p.m. holding a shovel and began swinging it toward officers. Authorities said officers first attempted to subdue him using less-lethal methods, including deploying a Taser. Shacklett briefly returned inside the house but later came back out holding knives and moved toward officers.
Police said officers then fired their service weapons as Shacklett advanced toward them. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses nearby reported hearing loud bangs and multiple gunshots during the confrontation. No officers were injured, and the roommate who initially contacted emergency services was not harmed.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the New Castle County Police Criminal Investigations Unit.
