Authorities have identified 82-year-old Gary Leroy Johnson as the man who died following an officer-involved shooting in Butte, Montana.
According to police, officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on Hope Road around 10:45 p.m. on April 16 after a woman reported that her ex-husband had fired gunshots at her.
When officers arrived, they encountered Johnson inside an attached garage armed with a shotgun. Police say he did not comply with commands to drop the weapon and instead raised it toward them. Officers then opened fire, striking him multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Montana Department of Criminal Investigation is expected to carry out an independent review of the incident as part of standard procedure.
