Authorities have identified 48-year-old Joseph Munoz as the man who died following a deputy-involved shooting in Nipomo, California. The incident occurred on April 19 in the 700 block of Hill Street after deputies responded to a report of a family disturbance.

Officials say Munoz was inside an apartment where he allegedly threatened to kill his mother and grandmother. When deputies arrived, he briefly came to the doorway before retreating inside and arming himself with a shotgun.

According to investigators, Munoz pointed the weapon at responding deputies and fired, prompting officers to return fire. He was struck during the exchange and later died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts by deputies.

No deputies were injured in the incident. Munoz, who had a prior criminal history, was known to law enforcement. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities say there is no continuing threat to the public.
