Fatal Charleston detention center shooting death of Kenneth Samuel – Obituary
Kenneth Samuel, a 61-year-old resident of Columbia, was declared dead Tuesday after he was discovered unresponsive inside the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.
Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal confirmed that detention deputies found Samuel in medical distress around midnight while inside the facility. Despite their response, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Emergency personnel from the North Charleston Fire Department and Charleston County EMS were called to assist after the discovery.
Following the incident, Carl Ritchie requested an independent inquiry by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office stated that its internal Office of Professional Standards is also involved and is working alongside state investigators and the coroner’s office to determine the circumstances surrounding Samuel’s death.
