A 46-year-old man died after a police encounter ended in a shooting in Bryan County, Oklahoma, following an attempted arrest involving outstanding warrants.
Authorities with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reported that Bokchito police officers located Teddy Kelsey on April 13 in the early evening near Impson Street in Bokchito. Officers said they were attempting to take him into custody due to an active warrant.
According to officials, when officers approached, Kelsey allegedly discharged a firearm and then ran from the scene on foot. He reportedly moved toward the area of his residence near Ballpark Road and East Street.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Choctaw Nation Lighthorse Police Department and the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office, assisted in securing the surrounding area, which was active due to a nearby baseball event.
Investigators said officers later confronted Kelsey at his home, where he was again seen with a weapon. The situation escalated, resulting in officers firing shots.
Emergency personnel provided medical assistance at the scene, but Kelsey did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead where the incident occurred.
Officials confirmed that no other individuals were harmed, and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
