Authorities have identified the man who lost his life following a high-speed crash connected to a stolen vehicle pursuit in Sturgis. The victim has been named as 26-year-old Egon Lake of Whitewood.
According to police, officers responded around 10:39 a.m. to reports of a stolen vehicle. When they attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over and sped away, traveling west on Lazelle Street at speeds exceeding 70 mph while driving dangerously.
During the pursuit, the suspect’s Ford F-250 struck a white Honda Accord that was moving in the same direction after the truck attempted to pass other vehicles.
Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles and had to be freed by emergency crews. The driver of the stolen truck, identified as 50-year-old Don Crisafulli of Sturgis, was airlifted to a hospital with critical injuries and is reportedly improving. Authorities say charges against him are pending.
Egon Lake, who was driving the Honda, died from injuries sustained in the crash.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the collision, while Sturgis police continue a separate criminal investigation. Several agencies assisted at the scene, and the case remains under investigation.
