Michael L. Martens, a man from Overland Park, lost his life early Saturday morning after a collision involving multiple vehicles on a major interstate corridor.
Police reported that the incident happened around 3:30 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 435 near Quivira Road. According to preliminary findings, a driver traveling northbound on Interstate 35 exited onto eastbound I-435 and, after shifting into a left lane, struck Michael L. Martens, 45, who was walking in the roadway.
Authorities said Martens was then hit by a second vehicle after he had already been thrown onto the pavement. He died at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.
Investigators noted that both motorists involved stopped immediately after the incident and fully cooperated with law enforcement at the scene.
Police continue to review the circumstances surrounding how Martens came to be in the travel lanes, and the investigation remains ongoing.
